Rhythm in Your Shaking

Thin Man Style

I know there are drinks that are meant to be stirred, but I tend to prefer a shaken cocktail. It may have something to do with the cocktail shaker, the drama of the shake or maybe it is just the idea of having a chilled cocktail served up with a festive garnish in a celebratory glass. Though I enjoy a Bourbon on a couple of rocks, the first and last sips are never the same. The only difference in the last sip of a well chilled manhattan his the tumble of the cherry down side of the glass.

No one knows the art of shaking a manhattan better than Nick Charles.....I hope that Johnny Depp is brushing up on his cocktail shaking skills in time for the Thin Man remake.

Thin Man

Manhattan

4 ounces Bourbon or Rye whiskey
1 ounce sweet vermouth
2-3 dashes aromatic bitters
maraschino cherry for garnish

Chill martini glass by filling to the brim with ice and water

Add whiskey, sweet vermouth and bitters to a shaker with a few ice cubes, shake to the rhythm of a fox trot.

Discard ice from martini glass then strain Manhattan into the chilled glass and garnish with cherry.

By the way- did you know that you should refrigerate your vermouth after you open the bottle. You will be surprised by the difference it makes!
